The World Outside My Crystal
Harry Smothers
(Tune: "World Inside the Crystal" by Steve Savitsky)
Beyond the world I live in, apart from Old Detroit,
Is a world that makes me wonder if the universe is right
With a magic online service, my computer lets me know
Of the other worlds beyond it where I usually can't go

Chorus:
My computer uses Gateway, or maybe AOL,
To the places where my friends meet far from my private hell,
Where we play with words and symbols, communication is the game
For it's cheaper than the phone bill, and it's faster than a plane.
Now, you who do not know this world, its offerings and joys
You can't conceive computers as anything but toys
You mistrust them with your fortunes or let them run your lives
From the chaos of gestation your portfolio survives.
