WNCLUG

I went to the meeting of the Western North Carolina Linux Users Group tonight… the first one they have held for a couple years, if I’m hearing correctly.  Apparently there is enough interest to get things going again.

The presentation at the meeting was very … much over my head.  Not only the topic, but the show of expertise.  They were presenting how to set up your OWN Internet Phone system, using freely available software and low-cost systems.  It was very much like Old Linux — where a few geeks get together an assemble their own system, patting themselves on the back that they were the only people who could do this, meanwhile setting up a geeky system costing a couple hundred dollars… and the presenter admitted he doesn’t watch television, so he doesn’t know what services Vonage and MagickJack provide.

I called for a sub-group for “newbies”, people who are NOT programmers and just want a working system away from The Evil Microsoft Empire.  They heard me; time will tell if action is taken on the suggestion.

It was the end of a very difficult day.  My friend Mike spent the night (on my couch), and had a TIA (mini-stroke)… he refused to go to the hospital at the time, but promised me he’d go if he wasn’t better in the morning (mistake, but what can you do?).  Well, he was BETTER in the morning, but not close to being GOOD, so we hopped on the bus and went to the hospital (which took about an hour from the time we left).  I stayed with him until about 3 pm, and then went downtown and did what I could… I missed the meeting at 2 — which I am in charge of — but got word to the meeting that I couldn’t make it and why.  Then I hung around until the meeting I was just talking about.

I came home, plopped in my chair, turned something on  the TV, and faded in and out of consciousness… when Frankie called at 11:20, we decided I should just go to bed.

…and then I woke up a few minutes before 5 am, and can’t get back to sleep.  Typical.

Hugs,
Me
